Want to Learn How to Sing, But Don’t Know Where to Start?

Oof, a tale as old as time, the desire to start something new, but no idea on how to even begin. Well, here's a tried and tested first step...sing. Sing your favorite song, sing a chorus of the only song you know, sing along with a commercial, a jingle, a nursery rhyme, sing a cappella, sing with the radio, open your voice and let one continuous sound out!! It may feel elementary, but you have to start somewhere, and more often or not, the thought of making a sound is scarier than the sound its self!

Well, now you've done that let's tackle something slightly more challenging, the real reason you may have found yourself reading this random blog....If you’ve ever thought “I want to learn how to sing… but I don’t even know where to begin,” you’re not alone.

The desire is there. The starting point isn’t. so, let's clear that up.

First You don’t need to be “naturally talented” to learn how to sing.

Singing is a skill. And sure, some people have an easier disposition with music, just like some people prefer horror movies, and some rom coms. But at the end of the day, singing is still a skill. Like any skill, it gets better through building awareness, consistency, and practice. Every confident singer you admire once stood exactly where you are now: curious, unsure, and figuring it out as they went!

Why Starting Feels So Hard

One thing I've noticed as a vocal coach and professional singer,  most people don’t struggle with actually singing per se, but they they struggle with:

  • Knowing what to sing

  • Knowing how to practice

  • Not understanding what’s happening with their voice

  • Feeling overwhelmed by advice, videos, and terminology

  • Comparing themselves to trained or professional singers

So when everything feels overwhelming and vague... it’s easy to do nothing at all.

Instead of jumping straight to the Grammy...start to understand one thing about your voice each week.

It's not “How do I become a great singer?”
But more bout “How can I understand my voice better today?”

That shift changes everything.

A strong starting point isn’t belting high notes or mastering technique, but actually  learning to listen to your voice.

So what does that look like, or sound like?!

Here’s a couple of simple first steps to what “starting” can actually look like:

  • Notice how your voice feels when you warm up

  • Learn a few gentle vocal warm-ups

  • Sing songs you enjoy and love to sing (not what you think you “should” sing)

  • Track what feels easy, what feels hard, and what changes over time

It's not about long practice sessions. You don’t need fancy equipment. You just need a way to bring awareness and intention to what you’re already doing.

Why Structure can Help So Much!

One of the biggest breakthroughs for new singers is having a simple structure.

When you have a place to:

  • Track warm-ups

  • Note how your voice feels

  • Write down goals

  • See progress over time

…singing stops feeling random and starts feeling intentional, encouraging, attainable. You begin to trust your voice instead of questioning it.

You’re Allowed to Be a Beginner

One myth we need to clear up straight away - you are allowed to be a beginner! Say it with me!! "I can be a beginner!" Confidence comes after showing up, but you do actually need to show up first!

You are allowed to:

  • Sound imperfect

  • Learn slowly

  • Change your goals

  • Take breaks

  • Enjoy the process

  • Hit every wrong note there is!

It's not about fixing your voice, it's about getting to know it, understand it's movements, learn how to control and work with it.

So If You’re Waiting for a Sign to Start Singing...

This is it. This is your sign.  Start small. Start gently. Start curious. Your voice will meet you there.

Let me know how you get on! Kisses, Lacy xx
